Project
In many countries and particularly in developing countries Energy Efficiency Programmes can contribute to carbon emissions reduction and to hard currency savings by reducing energy consumption. The programme on Refrigerator Efficiency in Ghana shows how a combination of policy tools and incentives can transform the National Market in short time and produce a positive impact on key components of the national economy

The Refrigerator Efficiency in Ghana is part of “Promoting of Appliance of Energy Efficiency and Transformation of the Refrigerating Appliances Market in Ghana”, one on of the special projects on the Energy Commission of Ghana implemented with financial and technical support of UNDP-GEF (Global Environment Facility).  The primary objective of the project is to improve the energy efficiency of appliances marketed and used in Ghana through the introduction of a combination of regulatory tools such Minimum Energy Performance Standards and Information Labels (S&L) and innovative economic tools.

The Refrigerator Efficiency project operates under a system of rebate. The Energy Commission offers rebates for the purchase of new refrigerators, after old and functional ones have been surrendered. The Energy Commission estimates there are more than 2 million inefficient refrigerators operating in Ghana therefore the success of this project will mean large savings of fuels as well as an important reduction of carbon emissions nationally.
