Recently I drove past an asphalted car park where I used to park my car under a smallish tree to escape the fiery African sun and noticed the tree had been cut down. The loss of the tree saddened me, but what wasmuch more tragic was that there had been no effort to replace the tree. Not only should we be replacing any tree we cut down, but we should be planting armies of trees across such sites and along all our suburban roads with many different purposes in mind. First, the heat energy absorbed by such asphalted surfaces under a South African sun must be enormous considering the similarity such a surface has to a black body. Having well-developed green canopies covering these sorts of surfaces will reduce the energy absorbed by the surface and probably have a marked impact on the life-span of that surface. Furthermore, the boundary layer of air will now be over a much cooler canopy rather than a hot radiating surface.

Trees come in many shapes and habits and the habit that is of particular use in eco-friendly energy management systems is the evergreen vs deciduous habit. A huge amount of South Africa’s energy bill goes into either warming structures in winter or cooling them in summer. Careful positioning of deciduous trees to the north (we’re in the southern hemisphere) of small structures such as homes will throw shade onto the structure during summer and thereby helping to keep its temperature close to air temperature. The same tree in winter will drop its leaves (a source of mulch and compost) and allow the sunlight to strike the building and thus helping to heat it. It shouldn’t be that difficult to include architectural features (think windows, sunrooms, insulation and shutters) that would absorb this radiant energy, distribute it through the structure and hinder its escape. Deciduous trees may not solve our heating and cooling needs but with careful thought they can help reduce the bill.

In South Africa we have an Arbor Day in which we are encouraged to plant an indigenous tree. The environmental departments/societies come up with a group of indigenous trees that are designated “trees of the year” and these are sold for planting on arbour day or as first choice for the year. However with South Africa’s 25% or more unemployment, adding fruit and nut trees to this mix can make life for those at the bottom of the pile just a little easier and healthier. This doesn’t add to the indigenous biodiversity and conservation value of the Arbor Day tree lists but it would add to the quality of life experienced by humans and other organisms. By carefully selecting the kinds of trees we plant and the sites, such as parks, road sides and islands, schools and other public amenities we choose to plant these trees in, we enhance our opportunities for many other benefits down the line. They can be a source of high quality timber. Nut trees produce more nuts with age and are packed with proteins and lipids. These can either stimulate small-scale entrepreneurial opportunities for harvesting and marketing, or they can be used to supplement the diet of people caught in the nether regions of society. Many of our schools have feeding schemes to supplement the nutrition of their students. A tree like a Pecan tree once it matures can produce at least 16 kg of nuts a year and in South Africa these would be produced during mid-winter when other sources of high quality food packed with proteins and lipids are rare. Trees also increase the resource base for many other organisms and so every extra tree leaves us all winners.
