GlobAllomeTree
Type of tool
Acronym
A new tool for assessing carbon stocks in forests has been brought out jointly by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), CIRAD (Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement) and Tuscia University. This new tool, an international web platform called GlobAllomeTree, is meant to help countries assess their forest biomass with a view to improving research on climate change as well as enhancing mitigation initiatives. The new tool enables access to a diversified range of tree models that use detailed information (such as wood specific gravity) to derive estimates of forest carbon storage capacity. One strong feature of GlobAllomeTree is that allows users to upload tree biomass models, whilst also providing links to related scientific articles. The database supporting the tool currently contains data on some 57countries in North American, Europe and Africa, and data for South Asia and South-east Asia is expected to be available in the near future.
