Primary policy drivers for biofuels promotion in Africa include security of energy supply, a reduction of the foreign exchange burden of oil importing countries, as well as environmental benefits such as the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Recent years, however, have seen considerable debate on the potential of GHG emission reductions of biofuels worldwide. This Group provides a forum to discuss opportunities and challenges of biofuels in Africa with respect to their potential to contribute to climate change mitigation.
